Bengaluru development minister KJ George on Tuesday said there is a proposal from the transport department for introducing 3500 more city buses to be run by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). “The idea is to promote mass transport and to encourage people using private vehicles to shift to buses.

“Presently, BMTC runs 6500 buses, being used by around 50 lakh commuters every day. 45 percent of the city commutes through bus transport and we have 58 lakh private vehicles, with two wheelers dominating the chunk. If we can provide more bus options and better connectivity, people will be happy to shift to mass transport. However, we need Rs 1,000 crore to buy additional buses proposed. A final decision on the same will be taken after another round of discussion with the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.”

George made this statement following a meeting of urban experts and civic agencies under the chairmanship of chief minister.
