Ernakulam: KSRTC To Operate More Buses Towards City

The KSRTC’’s plan to operate 20 brand new Venad city service buses from the city to Paravur and Kodungalloor through the Goshree bridges received a recent setback after a section of private bus operators approached the court.

Their contention was that the introduction of more buses in the city would worsen traffic congestion. Though private bus owners had over a year ago approached the court opposing the KSRTC’s 10 services linking Aluva and Thripunithura through the Airport-Seaport Road, the RTC was able to get a favourable ruling. All the services now run on profit.

Despite promises made by the Transport Department, the KSRTC is yet to operate city buses in Kochi using the 50 permits reserved for it. A Motor Vehicles Department official said the RTC can easily run more than 50 city buses, since there is a huge demand for public transport in residential and commercial areas left untouched by private buses.

The corporation’s goodwill increased after it operated 50 additional services in the city during the private bus strike some time ago. “The agency used to operate city services in Kochi till over a decade ago. “The RTC’s city services will end the monopoly of private buses in the city. Civic agencies must earmark pay-and-park centres on government lands and vacant private lands, so that people can park their vehicles there and commute to the city in buses,” he said.

Inadequate public transport in the routes has led to people travelling to the city in cars, autorickshaws and two-wheelers, causing congestion on the roads.

  1. some planing is essential…….
for example passengers from the south railway station now forced to depend on autoriksam, from railway station to the next bus stop for catching buses towards kotayam, aleppy, trivandrum, thodupuzha, piravom, pala, vaikom……and so on….if they are with luggages "autoriksha mans" should sueeeeeez them..
if ksrtc reroute service to these areas through the 'pocket road' infront of the railway station from south ksrtc stand, pengers from railway station can easily access it…..
ksrtc running buses towards piravom on every 20 minutes,moovatupuzha-thodupuzha also on every 20 minutes and other services towards kotayam ,thripunithura-veegaland-kakkanad-moovatupuzha route (every 20 minutes) helps to make a service on every 3-4 minutes . By this ksrtc can grab all passengers now going on private buses like towards kotayam, piravom, pala etc…..
Also trying to start buses towards aluva-kothamangalam,munnar,kumily(
through aluva) from railway station …… by a good bus shelter infront of railway station (by the help of corporation, railway) ksrtc can motivate public response……………

i am sure it will increase revenue of ksrtc ….
passengers towards vytila, thripunithura also choose ksrtc ……
i remember the huge conjuction in ksrtc buses when ksrtc buses only allowed to travel on MG ROAD in both direction, now only in one direction….. towards ernakulam. But these is the backborn of revenue of ksrtc services towards ernakulam from piravom, kotayam etc…
south railway station bus stop is the main bus stop in ernakulam …….

  2. what we need is a strong political will from officials… rumors(?) says that most of the city service buses are owned by top government officers including police!!! then how will these buses without panicking and endangering common men! this monopoly of private buses would have een thrown away decades back!
we dont have planning… its really shameful to even call kochi as a metro or even as a city!!!!

  3. Reghuji, You are very correct. Most of the city services are run by binami's.

For city service ksrtc need lowfloor buses like BMTC(Banglore) which will reduce the board in and out times.
    All the best
