After a long wait of 3 years, the construction of the modern bus terminal at Eenchakkal has gathered momentum again. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is gearing up to take up the construction of the bus terminal and a bus depot at Anayara by the side of the Kazhakuttam-Inchivila National Highway-47 bypass.
The bus terminal will come up on 5.79 acres of land owned by the KSRTC which is now used as parking lot for Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) buses. Eenchakkal bus terminal will be constructed on the lines of modern terminals in Chennai and Bangalore. The terminal will have a four-storey commercial complex with underground parking facilities.
Once the terminal is completed, KSRTC will shift super class and long-distance services from the Central Bus Station at Thampanoor to here. The long distance buses can be diverted though Kazhakuttam and NH bypass to reduce congestion on city roads. Short distance service such as services to Kattakkada and Nedumangad and inter-State buses to Nagercoil will continue to ply from Thampanoor bus terminal. KSRTC will also launch link services to commute between Thampanoor bus terminal and Eenchakkal.
Agriculture Department will hand over 3.5 acres of land to KSRTC to construct Anayara Depot. The land has been given free of cost to the KSRTC on a long lease. Operation of buses from the crowded depots at Vikas Bhavan, Peroorkada, Pappanamcode, and Vellanad will be shifted to Anayara.
