Volvo buses in Kochi is making big time problem for KSRTC. Here’s an example of the lack of civic sense on the part of the travelling public. The KSRTC spent a whopping Rs 1,20,000 after commuters scratched and damaged the armrest and AC lids in almost all the 42 AC low-floor buses in Kochi.

Deccan Chronicle has reported an article about it.

“Certain miscreants have damaged the armrests and AC lids. Now we are replacing the foam arm rests with the reinforced type in all the buses. The first set of eight buses was fitted with the hard armrests last week at a cost of Rs 20,000. The remaining we’ll do in five stages,” Siju Joseph, depot engineer, said.

Each of the buses has 17 armrests and the replacement of a single piece costs Rs 160. The official said it might take three months before all the buses are fitted with the reinforced type as the corporation is currently trying to find the funds for the remaining works.

“We cannot channel it from the daily collections which have to be deposited in banks and ultimately used for paying fuel charges to the oil companies.”

The official added that the travelling public should show more of their civic sense. The same type of buses run in big cities like New Delhi but the commuters there are not so mischievous.

“The maintenance cost of the buses is high and we make it a point to do AC service in every three months. But even then the AC lids of most of the buses are found broken,” the official said.
