Passengers had a close shave when loco-pilot of the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express overshot the red signal near Oachira station and took the rake 200 metres further on the track around 8.15 pm on Tuesday. However, no untoward incident took place.

Though the Railway authorities sent another loco-pilot to man the train, train services in the sector went haywire. Later, the train resumed journey around 10.05 pm.   The preliminary inquiry revealed that the loco-pilot, identified as Sudheer, breached the signal accidentally. While the train does not have regular halt at Ochira, on Tuesday, the red signal was one when it approached the station.

The loco-pilot was immediately subjected to  medical check up at a nearby hospital. It was found that he was not under the influence of alcohol.

According to Railway officials, stern action, including suspension pending inquiry, will be initiated against the loco-pilot.  “It is a serious lapse on the part of the loco-pilot. He breached the signal and moved the distance of at least four coaches from the station. We will take appropriate action against the loco-pilot, including suspension,” a senior railway official told.
