KSRTC buses plying in the state will be installed with double horns as it was found that single horns do not produce enough sound. Directions have been issued to install two horns in KSRTC buses.

The KSRTC technical director in its directive said that the low level of sound produced by single horn was the main reason for road accidents. Vehicles are not able to hear the sound of horn of KSRTC buses coming from behind.  Even drivers have complained that due to low decibel sounds, buses do not reach the destination on time.

Technical experts of the corporation have conducted a study on the road mishaps and recommended horns which produce high sound.  Following this, two electric horns will be installed in buses. As air horns are banned, only electronic horns are being used in KSRTC buses.  Low and high tone horns were purchased as combo offers from companies have directed to use both the horns.

Till 2005, air horns were used in KSRTC buses until it was banned.  KSRTC drivers have also complained that state buses plying to other states, like the Scania and Volvo, do not have horns with high sound.  Other private hitech buses plying on national routes do use air horns and projector head lights. As the buses are registered in other states, even speed governors seldom apply.
