Seat belt usage for heavy vehicle drivers too must be made mandatory. In the recent accident involving KSRTC Neyyattinkara-Munnar Super Fast, the damages are severe. The CCTV video clearly shows that the driver fell off from his seat and thus the bus lost its control completely.
The severity of the accident could have been even reduced by a great extend if the driver had seatbelts fastened. Another similar incident, but more severe one occurred years back at Ankamaly when the driver fell of his seat, while trying to close the door on his side which was opened due to poor design. It was Coimbatore-Trivandrum Super Fast which completely lost control and fell over the railway over-bridge causing death of 3 and other extreme damages.
The Motor Vehicles Department should come up with a rule that all heavy vehicles drivers should fasten their seatbelts while driving. They must also make sure that everyone follows the rule strictly which would definitely reduce such severe accidents.
