Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain on Wednesday shot off a letter to the City Police Commissioner and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), asking that the entry to Rajaji Road be restored with immediate effect, considering the hardships faced by motorists, especially KSRTC buses.

The entry to Rajaji Road, which was shut in connection with Kochi Metro rail work, has remained closed even after the work was completed. Ms. Jain looked into the issue after the KSRTC District Transport Officer lodged a complaint with the civic administration about the circuitous route KSRTC buses had to take owing to the denial of access to Rajaji Road from M.G. Road.

“The complaint was found genuine. In fact, a meeting of stakeholders convened during the previous corporation regime had pointedly asked not to close the entry to Rajaji Road. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had obviously acted in violation of this understanding,” Ms. Jain said,

Though the traffic police raised some objections against reopening the entry, the Mayor wanted the directive to be complied with. KMRL authorities said that the entry was closed at the instance of the traffic police and that a direction had been issued to open it following the Mayor’s letter.
