In the wake of the arrangement between the KSRTC and the MVD officials that it would go soft on ‘erring’ buses which do not have speed governors taking into account the large number of buses under the RTC fleet, the management has issued warnings to drivers not to exceed the speed limit by 60 km/hr.

The officials have also said that the management would not take up the responsibility if the drivers are caught for over-speeding and insisted that the drivers would have to pay the hefty fine themselves. Since the KSRTC had financial difficulty in procuring speed governors for all the 6,157 buses operating in the state, the Motor Vehicle Department have been quite lax with the Corporation in this regard.

With the recent order, the drivers have become more careful and the number of accidents have also come down, the officials added.

The MVD had conducted a state-wide drive in the first and second weeks of October to ensure that all buses are operating with speed governors. Even though the KSRTC officials claim that a majority of the buses have installed speed governors over the weeks, there are reports that most of the buses still do not have them.

“ Most of the speed governors in the KSRTC buses are not fully functional. We have been demanding the officials to sanction us the amount to fix the equipment. However, the authorities have said that there would be a delay since procurement of materials would be difficult in the wake of the financial difficulties,” sources with the KSRTC said.
