A group of empanelled workers are doing their bit to support the crisis-ridden Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The workers of the body-building unit at Mavelikara have resolved to voluntarily forego their wages in rolling out the 17,000{+t}{+h}bus of the utility. This is their Vishu gift for the company.

As many as 55 empanelled workers are attached to the Mavelikara Regional Workshop, one of the five such units of the KSRTC in the State. The unit rolls out 10 buses a month, on an average.

M.V. Manoj, works manager of the unit, says the workers who get a daily wage of Rs.380 will each forego Rs.2,500 they receive for building a bus. This will result in savings worth Rs.1.33 lakh for the KSRTC. “Empanelled workers have been facing several uncertainties. Despite all the hardships, the workers believe the sacrifice is the least they could do for the company.

For the employees, a lot depends on the revival of the company,” he says. The bus, which is being built on an Ashok Leyland chassis, will have bonnet number 17,000. It had been decided to allot the number for the bus considering the importance of the occasion.

The workers’ target is to release the bus by April 13, ahead of Vishu. The bus will be formally launched in the presence of senior officials of the KSRTC, Mr. Manoj says.

As a Vishu gift for KSRTC, a group of empanelled workers will forgo their pay to roll out the 17,000th bus of the utility.
