Chandy was in Kollam to attend the commemoration meeting of former municipal chairman Karumalil Sukumaran. He arrived at the Kollam station in the Chennai Mail. He then went to Neendakara along with party workers to visit homes of fishermen who drowned in the sea after their boat capsized. Around 5 PM, he reached Thankassery to attend the commemoration programme.

Chandy went to the KSRTC bus stand at 7.15 PM and boarded the AC bus going to Thiruvananthapuram airport. His aide bought two tickets but the conductor took one back as Chandy had pass. The conductor said they could stop the bus wherever the former CM wanted to alight. But he said he would alight at the proper stop.

However, KSRTC authorities said that passes have not been issued to anyone to travel in low-floor AC buses.
