As part of the initiative to offer a comfortable journey to passengers, KSRTC has introduced smart cards. Passengers can now travel in KSRTC buses by using smart cards which can be purchased beforehand. The corporation will utilise GPRS-enabled ticket machines to implement the system. By introducting a system prevalent in foreign counties, the corporation intends to attract passengers.

The card can be purchased for Rs 10. Passengers can recharge the card for any amount by giving money to the conductor or through online banking. Instead of giving money to the conductor after boarding the bus, the card should be handed over to the conducter. When the card is swiped on the ticket machine, the corporation will get the ticket amount. The smart cards will be made in the format of ATM cards. The new system will also solve the shortage of loose change during bus journeys.

By procuring a card and recharging it, passengers can travel in KSRTC ordinary buses to Scania. Presently, the KSRTC is issuing passes to regular passengers. However, there are many shortcomings. Passengers are able to travel for a specific time period only in the same route using the pre-paid pass. In contrast,  passengers can travel in any route using the smart cards.

Keltron has been entrusted for the implementation of the smart card system. Though the project was announced two years ago, it was not implemented. The authorities hope that the project can be introduced within two months.

The new system is part of the initiative to attract passengers for getting more revenue for KSRTC.  The corporation has envisioned several projects in the last one year for increasing revenue.

The ATM facility at KSRTC depots which was inaugurated the other day,  courier facility through KSRTC buses, mobile towers above depot buildings and coffee vending machines at depots are part of the initiative to increase revenue.
