Computers seized from KSRTC depot at Alappuzha

Two computers, used for electronic disbursal of bus tickets at the Alappuzha depot of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), were seized following revenue recovery orders from the District Sub-Court on Monday.

According to KSRTC officials, the computers were seized following cases filed by two persons in the Sub-Court and the Munsiff Court in connection with a loan taken from them by a person who earlier used to run the KSRTC canteen on a contract basis. The contractor, Shahul Hameed, allegedly borrowed Rs.80,000 from one P.C. Antony and Rs.40,000 from K.U. Ramanan, both of whom filed separate cases to regain the money after Hameed defaulted.

Though Hameed had stopped running the RTC canteen way back in 1996, his security deposit of Rs.52,353 was still with the Corporation. Following the complaint lodged by Mr. Ramanan, the Munsiff Court ordered the Corporation to submit Rs.40,000 with the court, which the Corporation did. However, the Sub-Court, acting on the complaint lodged by Mr. Antony, also ordered the KSRTC to submit Rs.80,000. Though the Corporation submitted the Rs.12,353 it had with it after submitting Rs.40,000 in the Munsiff Court, the Sub-Court ordered that the entire amount would have to paid.

Ticket Disbursal

The Corporation failed to do so, and on Monday, the computers were seized. KSRTC officials said they were not given any notice on the recovery procedure, following which the electronic ticket disbursal system had to be stopped, which in turn caused delays in the entire system at the depot.

Ernakulam: KSRTC To Operate More Buses Towards City

The KSRTC’'s plan to operate 20 brand new Venad city service buses from the city to Paravur and Kodungalloor through the Goshree bridges received a recent setback after a section of private bus operators approached the court.

Their contention was that the introduction of more buses in the city would worsen traffic congestion. Though private bus owners had over a year ago approached the court opposing the KSRTC’s 10 services linking Aluva and Thripunithura through the Airport-Seapor
t Road, the RTC was able to get a favourable ruling. All the services now run on profit.

Despite promises made by the Transport Department, the KSRTC is yet to operate city buses in Kochi using the 50 permits reserved for it. A Motor Vehicles Department official said the RTC can easily run more than 50 city buses, since there is a huge demand for public transport in residential and commercial areas left untouched by private buses.

The corporation’s goodwill increased after it operated 50 additional services in the city during the private bus strike some time ago. “The agency used to operate city services in Kochi till over a decade ago. “The RTC’s city services will end the monopoly of private buses in the city. Civic agencies must earmark pay-and-park centres on government lands and vacant private lands, so that people can park their vehicles there and commute to the city in buses,” he said.

Inadequate public transport in the routes has led to people travelling to the city in cars, autorickshaws and two-wheelers, causing congestion on the roads.

KSRTC to divert 85 superfast buses through Edapally-Aroor highway

At last KSRTC is doing that. Yes, They are going to divert 85 Super Fast Buses through Edappally - Vyttilla - Aroor stretch of NH 47. This helps the passengers to save time and corporation to save the fuel and wear and tear of the buses.

Passengers will be able to save at least an hour that they now endure through congested routes when the buses pass through the city hub and West Kochi. The regional authorities of the agency had submitted to the head office a list of 46 south-bound and 39 north-bound buses that can be diverted through the highway. This would mean that almost half the number of superfast buses that currently pass through the Ernakulam bus stand would be diverted through the highway. This would also reduce congestion in the city hub, as many of these buses operate two or more daily trips through the city.

Since superfast buses from different RTC units operate trips through Ernakulam, the schedule of each bus would have to be reworked, said an official. Buses which ply shorter distances might even be able to ply an additional trip daily, utilising the time saved on the other trips. On its part, the KSRTC would have to ready a full-fledged station-master office and parking area at Vytilla for the superfast buses that would be diverted.

“The diversion will not seriously affect commuters to West Kochi since the RTC’s ordinary, fast passenger and rest of the superfast buses would continue to operate through there. We would operate more services if required through the area,” the official said.

Tvm: KSRTC Blog, the KSRTC bus users blog today organised an interactive session on ‘KSRTC and the public’ in association with the KSRTC Travellers’ Forum in Trivandrum.

Sujith Bhakthan, the blog Administrator took up the grievances with the top management of KSRTC, on behalf of the commuters who have posted their complaints on the blog. Mr. T P Senkumar, MD, KSRTC; R Gopalakrishnan Nair, Vigilance Officer, KSRTC and senior trade union leaders who were present on the occasion gave a patient hearing to the long list of complaints. Along with the complaints, there were a few practical suggestions too, which the KSRTC has agreed to implement.

Mr. Senkumar while replying to the grievances said that KSRTC was facing a severe manpower crunch and this was hampering the daily operations to a great extent. At present there is a shortage of 4,000 drivers while KSRTC plans to recruit 7,000 new conductors. The KSRTC fleet has 215 Super Fast and 700 odd Fast Passenger class buses. 74% buses are in the Ordinary category. AC Deluxe buses haven’t taken off well. KSRTC’s share of the bus coverage in the state is only 26% while there are 13,742 private buses.

KSRTC is improving the connectivity to Technopark and Infopark with the recently launched JNRUM Volvo buses but the patronage is very low. The timetables for these Volvo buses are being put up on all their stops. Presently KSRTC is providing transport services to Infosys and TCS in Technopark and talks are going with other companies like IBS.

There has been a very good response for the online reservation service of KSRTC for 182 buses that have been introduced. KSRTC will be introducing GPS tracking of buses soon and this is expected to improve the services. But KSRTC has a long way to go in IT implementation.

The KSRTC Blog was started in September 2008 by Sujith Bhakthan, a third year Engineering Student to help people who love KSRTC and for those who wish to see the KSRTC in a higher position.

Garuda volvo stopped it service to Bangalore temporarily. News and pictures submitted by Ranjith Reghunath.

Premium Volvo service lying idle since 3 days....sheer negligence!!Jan 12 2009..18.30..

TVM BLR VOLVO GOT A MAJOR WHEEL FAULT ENROUTE at Krishnapuram, NH47, Kayamkulam...LUCKILY NO ACCIDENT HAPPENED!!!!

Here is how the incident happened. I met  the bus driver, a senior KSRTC checking inspector and the security guard at Krishapuram and this is what they have told me about the incident.
The RA 100 B7R was doing the TVM-BLR schedule. When the bus reach
ed Krishapuram, the  wheels started waving and the driver smelt something fishy. So he pulled the bus immediately to the side of the road. When he checked the Front Right wheel, he  saw a major oil leak and burning smell.

He informed the nearest depot [KYLM] and mechanics came for assistance. But they were afraid to touch the bus since it was volvo and the buses are under maintenance by volvo Service Dealer. Poor passengers. They were transfered to the TVM-EKM volvo and that bus went to BLR..

Then they called the volvo dealer Vista Driveline Motors (P) Ltd,Kalamassery. The mechanics came and f ound out that the problem was with the wheel bearing, which needs to be replaced. But the issue  was not with the wheel bearing. Tee team from Kalamassery was not able to identify  the issue and they didnt have the right spares..

Now they are waiting for  the expert team from Bangalore with the spare parts!!!.. Poor driver.. he was guarding the bus day and night since 3 days..

The senior KSRTC checking inspector of KYLM depot informed me that there is a big issue going on between KSRTC and VOLVO now. reg. the maintenance of theses 3 buses.. VOLVO people are not helpful, KSRTC mechanics dont know the ABCD of volvo..Now KSRTC is going to file a case against VOLVO for not repairing the bus on time and demanding compensation for causing the delay of 3 days which is a huge revenue loss..!!!
Speaking of volvos, we had 2 volvo B7R MK I TP 620 and 621 during Ganesh Kumar era......those things were poorly maitained and now sold off..after auction...now we hav 3 volvo B7R MK4..RA 100,101,102....lets see wat happen to these....

Also the 15 VOLVO LF 8400s.. many of those already met with accident..
KSRTC is always NO1 in POOR MAINTANENCE and they are blaming VOLVO ....

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has offered two instalments or 11 per cent of the 49 per cent dearness allowance arrears to KSRTC employees who have given notice for a token strike on January 5.

Transport Minister Jose Thettayil, who held talks with trade union leaders here on Saturday, told the media that the government agreed to give the DA arrears from this month. The corporation would have to raise additional resources of Rs.3.19 crore every month to clear the 11 per cent arrears. The unions had demanded implementation of the wage agreement, promotion of employees to the 256 supervisory posts, regularising temporary staff who had completed eight years’ service and minimum wages for empanelled staff.

TDF president Thampanoor Ravi, working president Kodikkunnil Suresh MP, general secretary V S Sivakumar, vice-presidents R Sasidharan and R Ayyappan told a news conference here that 49 percent DA was pending with the KSRTC.

No other institution in the state owes such a huge arrears to its employees. It was a violation of the agreement reached between the Corporation and the employees, they said.

When the UDF Government was voted out of power, there had been a DA of 19 percent in the KSRTC. But now, it has been increased to 49 percent. They said while the DA was allotted in other departments it was implemented with retrospective effect. But in KSRTC, the employees have been denied the benefit of the retrospective effect, they alleged. The leaders demanded that maximum DA should be allotted immediately.

Jose Thettayil, Minister for Transports, would hold talks with employees of the KSRTC today.

At last It Happened In Cochin Also

Hmm.... We all are happy. Here ends all the controvorsies happened behind the volvo with KSRTC and Cochin Corporation.
Yeah it started long back. I have regularly updated all the dispute between KSRTC and Cochin Corporation in this blog.

Some of them are

  1. Volvo buses to hit Tvm, Ekm roads from Nov 17th

  2. Luxury buses will start thier journey in Kochi from November 1

  3. Low floor buses ready to hit city roads, informs KSRTC

  4. Routing trouble for Volvo In Cochin

  5. KSRTC threatens to pull out of premium bus project

  6. Cochin Missed the HighTech Buses

Flagging off the seven orangecoloured Volvo buses at the Vyttila junction, Transport Minister Jose Thettayil sought the cooperation of the public to make the new bus service a success.“In Thiruvananthapuram, the Volvo buses are not very successful. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation(KSRTC) will have to bear the additional liability if the bus service does not reach upto the break-even level,” he said.

Hi-tech buses start rolling on Kochi roads

Union Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas on Monday inaugurated the much-awaited Volvo lowfloor bus service in the city. Lets hope that the new hi-tech buses would attract more people towards the public transport system, thereby easing the traffic congestion on the city roads.

It’s the same B8400 variant of Volvo transit bus which is rocking Bangalore roads that has hit the roads in Ernakulam. If you ask me, the dashing red coloured Volvo in Bangalore, looks a bit more attractive than the Orange colour Kerala RTC has chosen. Nevertheless, it should be a good experience to Cochin commuters. (Even Singapore and several other countries use this same model...)

Ticket prices are higher compared with BMTC Volvos In Bangalore (though diesel is cheaper in Kerala) starting Rs 10. (In Bangalore fares varies depends upon the routes.) (Makes more economical than unruly overpriced meter less autos in Cochin)

Other observations:

The comfort looks and performance a Volvo offers is not met by any of its competitors in the luxury buses segment.

The AC is nice and melodious radio complements the ambiance.

The driver has a rear view LCD screen with live feed from a camera. (LCD Powered By Karbon)

The automatic door. They are present for the sake of being there. Not of much use and does not really keep safety in mind. It is open most of the time, or when closed, it is opened whenever a passenger wants to hop off or hop on at places other than the bus stop itself.
The console has an LED screen which shows both system generated messages as well as messages relayed by control tower. A mike and an Ahuja audio system are obviously added additionally.

Cameras and Fire alarms have been provided. The central floor is extremely spacious to accommodate luggage, people with wheel chair or even a stretcher. Journey is smooth and comfortable. The driver steers the Volvo as if he's driving a car!!

There are electricity plug points where you can charge your laptop / mobile phone. (Dont know it will work or not)

Disc brakes that ensure passengers are not jerked forward

Another important thing is the ample amount of free space inside the bus. You will never need to anxiously wait for you to get out of the heavily crowded bus.

Noise levels, or the absence of it, is amazing as well. Not only is the engine noise well contained, but the bus also smothers outside noises, so for once, you can talk to your co-passengers without SHOUTING. It is indeed surreal, this level of refinement.

Almost everyone on the roadside-Other drivers, traffic police, general public, everyone turn their head and stare at Volvo as it passes by. If you sit near Window you can hope to gain some popularity.

KSRTC's Official Website is not yet updated with Volvo related information..

Note the automatic transmission-the D, N and R buttons-driving volvo is as easy as driving a scooty, except for the estimation skill you need while turning, owing to huge dimensions of the vehicle. But if you ask me, I love the manual transmission better-The sheer fun of changing gears manually-I feel like a handicapped while driving automatic-your left leg and hand has almost no use...

What is your take on that?

Let me know.

Fast, Refined and Comfortable, the Volvo will indeed change your perception of buses for city commuting. I just wish there were more Volvo’s along more routes in the city, until then though, we can dream, can’t we?

KSRTC Is Planning To Divert Long Route Buses Through NH Bypass

The website www.hindu.com has carried an article about KSRTC may divert long-distance buses through NH bypass . The site says that...........

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is considering a proposal to divert through the Edapally-Vytilla bypass around 50 per cent of superfast buses that currently pass through the congested western parts of the city and West Kochi.

Once implemented, long-distance passengers and the RTC would save about an hour and a half during each trip. There would be huge savings on fuel wasted in traffic snarls and the money spent on wear and tear of the buses too. “We will also be able to save Rs. 3 lakh that has to be paid each month as toll for the buses using the Mattancherry BOT bridge, at the rate of Rs. 10,000 per day,” said a high-ranking RTC official.

As of now, over 500 superfast, fast passenger and mofussil buses operate to the RTC’s main bus station, while another set of buses operates 300 short trips to its boat jetty bus stand. The diversion of a sizeable share of the long-distance buses from Edapally through Vytilla and Kundanoor will reduce traffic congestion along the arterial Edapally-M.G. Road-Thopumpady route.

This will pave the way for a superfast bus to pass along Vytilla every 15 minutes. The KSRTC will have to build infrastructure facilities like temporary parking areas for the buses and a shelter for passengers awaiting the buses.

At present, the KSRTC station master’s office functions from a tiny room located on the southern side of the Vytilla junction. Passengers have to wait under the sun, waiting for the few RTC buses that ply through the area.

An official said that short-distance services can be put into service on the Thopumpady-Alappuzha route, to compensate for the fall in number of buses passing through West Kochi once superfast buses are diverted through the bypass. More buses along the bypass will also provide relief to regular passengers, many of whom now hitch a ride in taxi cars and goods carriers from Vytilla to reach Cherthala and Alappuzha. Diverting long-distance buses through the bypass will become inevitable once an integrated bus terminal comes up in the proposed Vytilla mobility hub.

Routing trouble for Volvo In Cochin

Posted by Sujith Bhakthan T R at Monday, December 14, 2009

The website www.expressbuzz.com has carried an article about the Routing trouble for Volvo In Cochin. The site says that.............

The city will witness the launch of hi-tech Volvo buses before Christmas as the Kochi Corporation and the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) have reached a temporary consensus on the routes, but some problems remain unsolved.

The KSRTC and the Corporation have decided to commence service on two routes initially Fort Kochi to Aluva and Aroor to Angamaly. The Fort Kochi-Aluva bus will ply through Thoppumpady and Kundanoor and from there will enter the Bypass towards Aluva. The Aroor-Angamaly buses will go on the bypass and touch Aluva towards Angamaly. In short the premium bus service which was mooted as a solution to the traffic congestion in the city will not even touch city
roads but will ply through the outer areas.

The Corporation has forgotten that the project was implemented with the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) aid and is mainly aimed at improving urban infrastructure and transportation.Kochi has been allotted seven low-floor hi-tech buses in the first phase and the entire project covers 200 buses.

The KSRTC officials say that they want the maximum number of routes on city roads. “The KSRTC proposed a route map for buses along the city roads, NH bypass and arterial roads. We want to start services on routes that are technically and economically viable,” said a KSRTC official.

According to the JNNURM guideline, the Central Government will give 50 percent of the total project cost, the State Government will give 30 percent and the Corporation will have to bear 20 percent.“But here it is the KSRTC that is investing 20 percent.

So the Corporation cannot deny us the right to have a say in fixing the routes. We will commence the services before Christmas on the two routes that have already been accepted by the Corporation and the KSRTC. The rest of the routes will be finalised within a month,” he added.Seven buses will start service one after the other on these routes.

But many questions remain unanswered like the number of trips for each bus and fare charges. All that the Mayor and the councillors know is that the minimum charge will be Rs 10.Sources in the KSRTC said that the project has not been too successful in Thiruvananthapuram and that is the main reason for the KSRTC to reject routes suggested by the Corporation.

“In Thiruvananthapuram the KSRTC has fixed six trips a day on a route for a Volvo bus. The operational costs are high and the KSRTC should at least get Rs 36,000 per day from these trips. But currently they are getting only Rs 17,000.

The KSRTC is planning is to reschedule the routes in Thiruvananthapuram. Now the majority of routes are through the outer areas and the revamped routes will cover city roads,” he said.

“The Kochi Corporation authorities want to run the buses on wide roads which have no public transport system, but that is not acceptable to the KSRTC,” the official added. During the meeting held the other day, many differences popped up between the KSRTC and the Corporation authorities about the bus routes.

In the midst of this dissonance Volvo buses will start their hi-tech journey. But the big question is, ‘for whom will the buses roll?’
